Seeking Energy Security and Solutions

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

In my 2010 legislative survey, nearly two-thirds of respondents said that jobs and the economy are either of their top two concerns.  Roughly, 40% of survey respondents indicated they are worried about their household losing or changing jobs in the next year.  Additionally, more than half of survey respondents said energy supply and cost is one of their top concerns.

Off-and-on-again rumors of BP selling its assets in Prudhoe Bay bring those concerns together.  I take my charge to improve our quality of life and provide opportunities very seriously.

Alaska has partnered with BP for decades, with North Slope development powering our state’s growth and thousands of high-paying legacy jobs.   BP is also a major partner in one of the potential natural gas lines.  Clearly, ownership changes will greatly impact Alaska and our lives.

We need to know more about who a potential buyer is, how they operate, and what changes we can expect.   After all, it may be BP’s assets they’re selling, but it’s Alaska’s oil, and we need to know who’s producing it and that the terms are good for Alaska.

Together with other Legislators, I am seeking oversight any potential sale of BP’s Alaskan assets.

Questions to answer include:

·         How will the deal affect Alaskan jobs?

·         Will it hurt or inspire more production?

·         Will the deal lead to better maintenance of the aging infrastructure to prevent spills and shutdowns?

·         Will the deal provide more access to processing facilities to encourage exploration by smaller independent companies?

·         How will the deal impact the progress on a natural gas pipeline and efforts to meet Alaska’s in-state gas needs?

·         Are there any anti-trust implications that would put Alaska at a disadvantage at the negotiating table?

Alaskans deserve to know.

Here are stories from KTVA, the Alaska Dispatch, and Bloomberg Businessweek on this topic.

I’ve written before about one of the major successes of the last Legislature: passing the bill boosting Cook Inlet natural gas storage (HB 280).  This will create a supply cushion, ensuring Anchorage has enough gas supply to keep homes warm and the lights on during long or cold winters

In a recent update to the Legislature, local utilities reported they plan to have underground gas storage on the Kenai developed by next spring.  You can learn more about natural gas storage progress here.

Lastly, I and other lawmakers took the next step to secure natural gas supply for Anchorage needs.  We urged the State to extend the current export agreement which ensures companies exporting gas from Cook Inlet will meet Alaskan gas needs before shipping gas overseas.  See our letter and more here.  I’ll keep you posted on progress.

I’m looking out for District 29 and for Alaskans.
