Safety Alert from the Municipality
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
The Municipality of Anchorage put out a safety alert recently about a man whom Anchorage Police say may be using a carpet cleaning van to follow women and children around town.
The incidents happened on July 1st, but police are still looking for the suspect.
In the interest of both keeping our neighborhoods safe and helping solve the case, I’ve copied the Municipality’s alert for you below.
Please do call the Anchorage Police at 786-8724 if you see any suspicious behavior or have any information regarding the man.
I’m here for you, so please contact me with any concerns.
Warm Regards,

Project Safety Alert for the Anchorage Area
Date: July 3, 2010 (Sent to MOA employees on July 6, 2010)
Subject: Suspicious Person and Vehicle Alert
On July 1, 2010 at about 12:00 PM, a female driver in Anchorage, Alaska was followed to her residence by a silver colored minivan with “Thermax Carpet Cleaning” logos affixed to the side of the vehicle.
The woman first noticed the van on Northern Lights Boulevard when the male driver spent an inordinate amount of time looking at her and her vehicle.
The driver is described as a Caucasian male, approximately 6’1 to 6’4 in height with average build and believed to be in his 50’s, with a white colored mustache and shaggy but slicked back hair.
The woman thought that she had lost the suspicious minivan while driving in traffic but advised that shortly after arriving at her residence, the man driving the minivan knocked on her door.
The woman asked a male friend to answer the door and the man appeared to be startled when the door opened and it wasn’t a female. The man then stated “I’m in training and want to offer a free demonstration”.
The woman’s male friend told the man “No Thank You” and he promptly left the area.
Following this incident, a call was made to the local Thermax Carpet Cleaning Company to report the suspicious behavior of their driver. A representative from the Thermax Office in Anchorage advised that they didn’t have anyone matching this man's description working for them and further advised that a few of their magnetic company signs had recently been stolen.
The woman quickly called the Anchorage Police Department and found that this was the second complaint they had received that day for a man matching this description who had followed a woman in traffic to her home.
ExxonMobil’s General Travel Safety and Security Awareness Brochure recommends that:
If you are followed;
- Recommended to not stop at your residence
- Stay on well-lit streets
- Enter a busy parking lot or place of business
- Collect a detailed description of the vehicle and driver of the suspicious vehicle
- Call the local police immediately from your locked vehicle
- Remain in your vehicle until the police arrive
- DO NOT confront or get out of your vehicle to talk to the person following you
Thermax Carpet Cleaning Company advised that all signs have been removed from all of their trucks/vans at this time.
