Weekly Coffee Meetings to Resume

Dear Neighbors,

Yesterday at 5:26 pm the house adjourned from special session. With the passage of legislation toughening laws against sex trafficking and the Governor’s unprecedented withdrawal of his oil tax bill, the only issue remaining before the legislature was legislation promoting a small diameter gas pipeline from the North Slope to Nikiski.

Many of us in the legislature were not willing to turn over sweeping powers to a quasi-governmental agency and leave the state on the hook for a several billion dollar project. The 36-page bill would also have allowed for open-ended pricing potentially leading to massive increases in natural gas prices for Alaskan consumers.

A scaled down version of the bill allowing for more checks and balances and protecting the legislature’s oversight authority was considered. When it became apparent there was no more room to compromise, adjournment became inevitable.
