Exxon to Pay Interest Owed to Oil Spill Victims
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
I have good news to report. This afternoon ExxonMobil announced that it would not appeal the recent court ruling ordering it to pay almost half a billion dollars worth of interest to Alaskans damaged by the Exxon Valdez oil spell. It is unfortunate that Alaskans who saw there livelihoods ruined by Exxon’s carelessness have had to wait so long to receive the compensation they are owed, but it is good news that Exxon has finally decided to pay its debt.
After TransCanada and Exxon announced their new partnership earlier this month, I sent a letter, along with my colleagues Reps. Kawasaki, Gara, and Salmon, to Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson requesting that Exxon pay this debt as a sign of good faith to show that they really were committed to working with the state of Alaska. I do not know if my letter had any influence on this decision, but I am glad that they came to the correct decision. The interest will be wired to the settlement account this week, and the plaintiff’s attorney expects that 75% of the interest payments will be distributed to individual plaintiffs by the end of July.
I’m on your side, as always please call or email me with any thoughts, questions, or concerns.
Sincerely,
![Pete [signed] Pete [signed]](http://www.akdemocrats.org/petersen/signature.jpg)
