Fighting Price Gouging; Maintaining Military Readiness
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
This week AAA released a report showing that Alaska’s gasoline prices remain among the highest in the nation. If you subtract state taxes- since Alaska currently has no state gasoline tax- no other state comes close to Alaska’s prices. I know how hard our high fuel prices are hurting Alaskans, and I am continuing to work to outlaw fuel price gouging.
I have requested the House Labor and Commerce Committee hold hearings on my bill, HB 68, to prohibit oil refineries from charging excessive or exorbitant prices for gasoline, diesel, or heating oil before the Legislature reconvenes in January. This would allow the committee to immediately move the bill when the session begins. Three separate investigations have shown that Alaska’s high fuel prices are caused by abnormally high margins charged by Alaska’s two major oil refineries. Currently Alaska has no law against charging excessive or exorbitant fuel prices, and I am on your side fighting hard to protect Alaskans from fuel price gouging.

The military is currently concluding the Northern Edge training exercise, a large scale training pulling together members of all the branches of the military. As a member of the Joint Armed Services Committee, I had the opportunity to observe some of the exercises aboard the U.S.S. John Stennis aircraft carrier in the Gulf of Alaska including takeoffs and landings of F/A-18 Hornet fighter jets. It was an amazing experience to watch our brave service members up close, and to see the inner workings of this state of the art nuclear powered floating battle station.
On the Joint Armed Services Committee, we also were briefed this week about the potential threat from North Korea, and how the military is prepared to defend against any North Korean aggression. I am very grateful for all our military is doing to keep us safe, and I am committed to making sure Alaska continues to provide our brave service men and women with all the support they need.
As always, please give me a call or email me with any ideas or concerns, or anything that I can help you with.
Sincerely,
![Pete [signed] Pete [signed]](http://www.akdemocrats.org/petersen/signature.jpg)
P.S. Work is scheduled to begin next week on the upgrading of 6th Avenue between Muldoon and Patterson. You can go here for more information on that project.
