Pizza Party Saturday!
Crafting a State Energy Policy;
Updating Campaign Finance Laws

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

     You may have heard that heavy snow has prevented planes from flying in and out of Juneau, but the pizza party on Saturday is still on for 2:30 to 4 pm at Creekside Park Elementary.  We will have experts from the police department to answer questions about recent crimes in our neighborhoods, and Senator Wielechowski, Representative Gruenberg and I will look forward to hearing your ideas and concerns.  While I wish I could be there in person, I work for you and it is important to give you the chance to voice your concerns so I will be there in spirit- and via speakerphone.

     In the State Affairs Committee this week we moved the bill to update Alaska’s campaign finance laws in light of the recent Supreme Court ruling.  We passed a provision banning any foreign corporation from spending money on Alaskan elections.  The Supreme Court recently ruled that states could not prevent corporations from making independent expenditures to influence elections, and while I disagree with this ruling it is important that Alaska now adopt laws to require corporations follow the same disclosure rules that candidates follow.

     On the House Energy committee, we are hard at work crafting legislation to guide future energy development.  Earlier this session we passed a state energy policy bill which the whole House will likely vote on soon.  This bill sets the framework to future policy decisions.  The key goal of the bill is for Alaska to remain a leader in oil and gas production and become a leader in renewable energy production.  We are also working on an omnibus bill to make legal changes to implement this policy.  I believe that by being a leader in energy production, we can create and retain good-paying jobs for Alaskans and lower energy costs for Alaskan families.

     As always, please call or email me with any thoughts or concerns.

     Sincerely,

Pete [signed]
