Dear Neighbors,
Today we are joined by U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski for her annual Address to the Legislature with a question and answer session with the full Legislature following. The video will be available later today on her website.

Opposing Frankenfish in the State
This evening at 5 pm, my bill will be heard in the House Fisheries Committee. HB 100 will help keep Alaska’s salmon wild by prohibiting the growth or cultivation of genetically modified fish. The FDA’s preliminary approval last year of these “Frankenfish” does not go far enough to adequately determine the potential health and environmental risks. Alaska’s natural salmon resource produces 90% of the salmon for the nation, and is one of the only sustainable fisheries left in the nation. Governor Parnell agrees that environmental impacts have not been adequately vetted, and sent a letter to the U.S. Senate Subcommittee on Oceans, Atmosphere, Fisheries, and Coast Guard.
You can watch this hearing and all others live at www.alaskalegislaturetv.com.
There are three best ways to be involved with bills that are being heard in the House or Senate:
2) Write a Letter: Rep. Scott Kawasaki
State Capitol
Juneau, AK 99801
3) Sign up to testify via phone during the committee. Meetings are set up through the Fairbanks LIO office. You must be present to testify and committees typically require you to sign up in advance, which you can do through the committee aide carrying the bill.
What’s on Your Mind?
Finally, I will be home for the weekend to host my first constituent meet and greet. The meeting will be held at the Fairbanks Legislative Information Offices at the Alaska Federal Credit Union building near Home Depot. It will begin at Noon and run until 2pm. I hope that you will join me to discuss the major issues facing the legislature in the last 50 days of session, including the budget, education funding, the economy and finding solutions for the high cost of energy in Fairbanks.
