Domestic Violence Bill Becomes Law
Earlier this week the Governor signed House Bill 63 which will improve the functioning of the Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. Representatives Anna Fairclough, John Coghill and I sponsored this bill as the product of a task force the three of us served on addressing issues of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Most of us are all too familiar with the tragic levels of domestic violence and sexual assault in our state. The sad truth is that in times of economic stress, these problems get worse; local service providers and shelters such as AWAIC have been functioning at or near capacity for months. House Bill 63 is one small step towards combating violence in Alaska.

Taking Matters Into Our Own Hands
This morning fellow legislators and I joined with concerned citizens to take to the streets. With brooms, shovels and dustpans in hand, we joined together to clean up a block of Benson Boulevard and bring attention to the dirty state of our local roads in an effort to spur DOT to clean them up.

Minnesota Drive Resurfacing
I know from the e-mails that many of you have been as frustrated as I have been by the condition of the pavement on L Street and Minnesota Drive. Good news—it’s being repaved this weekend! The down side is that the repaving will involve some road closures this weekend, but hopefully the end result will be worth a little inconvenience.
Minnesota Drive will be closed from 26th Ave. to 15th Ave. from today, Friday, June 26th at 8:00 PM through Monday, June 29th at 6:00 AM due to paving operations. Please follow construction signs for detour routes.
You can expect nightly lane restrictions and short delays on Minnesota Drive from C Street to 13th Avenue between 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM. Be alert to heavy equipment and construction workers on the roadway and shoulder. For further information, call the Department of Transportation at 677-6656.
