Interior Veterans Cemetery Interior Legislators and I met with the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs to discuss movement on the long awaited Interior Veterans Cemetery. The department recently put out an request for information on suitable land in the area that could be used for a cemetery. After reviewing the proposals, we will accompany DMVA to look at potential land not far from recently studied land in North Fairbanks. Despite the lengthy process, the project is moving forward. The DMVA and the Federal VA have been working closely to guarantee this project happens. We are all pleased with the work they have done to ensure that the needs of our veterans from all branches of the armed services including our guardsmen and their families have been taken into consideration.
Public Comment on Yukon Tanana Area Plan The Department of Natural Resources has released the schedule for upcoming meetings regarding the Yukon Tanana Area Plan. This plan will serve as the basis for the management of state lands and waters within the planning area for the next 15 to 20 years. The lands affected include 9,068,010 acres of state owned land from roughly Rampart south to Cantwell. Classification designations include agriculture, wildlife habitat, minerals, public recreation, and forestry among many others. This plan greatly affects all of us who are users whether it be for hunting, mining, fishing, mushing or camping. Your voice is needed to make sure the state knows how you use the land and what you envision as its future. Please think about attending a public meeting to learn more about this important classification. Meetings will be held around the Interior. Those in District 8 are as follows: Healy: August 6st, 6-8pm @ Tri-Valley Community Center Fairbanks: August 8th, 6-8pm @DNR Northern Region Office, 3700 Airport Way Cantwell: August 10th, 6-8pm @ Cantwell School For more information about the plan, or to submit comments, please visit http://dnr.alaska.gov/mlw/planning/areaplans/ytap/, or call Philana Miles at 907-269-8529, email yukon-tanana.plan@alaska.gov .
