Friends and Neighbors,

Thank you to everyone who testified on the FY 13 Operating budget. The FY13 Operating Budget passed the House last night. Now it will be transferred to the Senate, where the Senate Finance Committee will make their own additions and deletions.

Rep. Guttenberg on the House FloorI am sorry to say that the Republican Majority in House Finance has dissolved ANGDA in the operating budget via an amendment. The Alaska Natural Gas Development Authority will cease to exist without even a public hearing. The voters approved the authority and will not even have a hearing to voice their concerns. Perhaps this is wise, but it is my belief that Alaskans deserve an opportunity to voice their opinions when major additions and deletions are made in the budget process.

Saving Olnes Pond

I have overwhelmingly heard from Interior residents about the need to save Olnes Pond. Without funds in the operating and capital budgets, the Division of Parks and Recreation will be forced to shut down the popular site. I submitted an amendment to the FY 13 Operating Budget that reinstated the ranger position that was cut in 2002 and I am happy to report that the money has been put into the budget.

Olnes is a beautiful area and has been a favorite spot of many Interior families for generations. What has happened to it during its time of passive management is a shame. Bringing it back to active management by hiring a park ranger and making improvements will, I hope, make it the safe and beautiful place it once was. Olnes Pond

Goldstream Lighting Project Community Meeting Opportunity

The Department of Transportation has a project to install streetlights at locations in the Goldstream area, including the intersection of Murphy Dome Road. Last fall this issue was brought to my attention by neighbors who had heard about this project and had concerns. DOT was not going to hold a public meeting about this project and that was unacceptable. After pressure from area residents, DOT has finally agreed to a public meeting.

Date: Thursday, March 29th, 2012

Time: 6-8pm

Location: Noel Wien Public Library

This meeting is a great opportunity to learn more about the project ask questions and voice your concerns. Details of the project are available at http://dot.alaska.gov/nreg/spot/ . If you are unable to attend the meeting, I encourage you to contact DOT to submit your comments to the project manager, Colleen Ackiss, by calling 907-451-5179 or emailing colleen.ackiss@alaska.gov .

Thank you for reading and please feel free to call my office and share your ideas.
