February 13th, 2012 Friends and Neighbors, Please join Senator Joe Thomas, Representative Bob Miller and me for a constituent meeting.
Date: Sunday, February 19th, 2012
Time: 1pm to 3pm Location: West Valley High School Library, 3800 Geist Road Many issues going on in Juneau directly affect the Interior. As members of the House Democrats, we have stood up against the Governor’s tax giveaway. While we need to find solutions to increase the flow of oil in the TAPS, we need to make sure that we have all the information to make the best decisions on Alaska’s tax regime.
Please come and talk to with us about what is happening in Juneau. For more information, please contact my office 907-456-8172.

This year energy relief and education have been my top priorities. With the lack of support and leadership from the Governor, the House Democrats are picking up the slack. The debate here isn’t just about oil taxes. We are fighting to make sure the state makes a commitment to education so that Alaska’s schools have the resources they need to give our children the opportunities they deserve.
Funding shortfalls, contract negotiations, soaring student loan interest rates, retirement issues and high-energy costs paint a bleak picture for education in our state. We cannot let this happen. Our youth are our future workforce and our greatest resource. Education must be a higher priority.
![]() Rep Guttenberg with students from the University of Alaska The Legislature is working on numerous bills to increase funding and support the education system:
- HB 49 “Parents as Teachers”
- HB 272 “Student Loan Interest Reductions”
- SB 171 “Increase Base Student Allocation”
- SB 182 “Pupil Transportation Funding”
- SB 121 “Teachers and Public Employees Retirement”
Making a commitment to education that lasts more than one year will allow school districts more time to address class size and keep teachers employed. Pink slips being handed out across the state do not help our students, teachers, families and state. Instead, they incite panic and distrust, and leave schools unable to innovate and plan ahead. We can alleviate these situations while increasing the quality of education in Alaska by making sure schools can count on getting the resources they need every year and by addressing the defined contribution issue in TERS.
As the session continues, I will continue to stand up for our students, teachers and families by demanding that the Legislature address the issues that affect every school district in Alaska.
