Do we have the energy?

Hello Friends and Neighbors,

Of course we have the energy but we also have a problem. We’ve not succeeded yet in figuring out how to get our gas to Alaskan households and businesses across the state, or how to get it to market!

The announcement by BP and Conoco Phillips that they are ready to move forward on a gas pipeline is very exciting.  Before we throw our hats in the air, however, we need to know more……a LOT more!

This is also true of the TransCanada proposal, an actual offer to sign a contract to build a gas pipeline, and finally achieve the dream of getting Alaska’s gas to market.

Representative Gardner begins to examine the TransCanada proposal before special session begins June 3rd.
Representative Gardner begins to examine the TransCanada proposal before special session begins June 3rd.

When this legislature passed the Alaska Gasline Inducement Act (AGIA) we agreed with the Governor that we wanted a deal which took our gas to market and protected our future by:

  1. Guaranteeing access to gas for Alaskans.
  2. Encouraging new exploration of oil & gas by providing fair shipping costs and requiring pipeline expansions.
  3. Promoting Alaskan hire in every legal way.

As your representative, my commitment remains to study the options, to consider the needs of Alaska, and ultimately to make the best choice I can for Alaska’s future.

I’m Berta and I’m still listening.

P.S.   This really merits headlines all it own, but I’m happy to tell people that as of right now the Capital Budget includes $25 million for Fire Island, a step forward in using renewable energy, in this case wind.  Yes, we are a state rich in energy of many types.  We’ve focused almost exclusively on our petroleum resources and it is my belief that we should use some of our wealth to study, promote, implement, and invent effective use of our other energy resources; wind, water, tide, geothermal, solar.
