Dear Neighbors,

(From Katie, one of Les’ aides)

Les asked that I send out a newsletter on a 20 minute CPR training we attended in June, so you know: a) CPR’s easier than ever; and b) CPR training is free and available as ever.  He’s out of town until the week of July 4th, so Dave and I can actually get some work done around here (Les wrote that line!).  Les wants you to know he made it through the course, with one a minor mishap – the free CPR dummy he was given seemed to do fine with the chest pumps until her face popped off.  We’re pretty sure that wouldn’t happen in real life.

Hopefully this e-mail won’t turn out to be ironic – last week Les was fishing and, as he puts it, was “jogged at” by a wolf and a bear on the same day.  And now he and his wife Kelly are off to canoe the Noatak River.  Given his track record, we might need to learn CPR and send folks after Les.

So… here’s some information about the CPR training from the Anchorage Fire Department.  We ran out of excuses not to learn the latest in CPR training, and hope you might have the time to attend (and get a free CPR doll and video!):

The Anchorage Fire Department (AFD), Loren Marshall Foundation, and American Heart Association have teamed together promote CPR in the Anchorage. CPR protocols have simplified in recent years and can be taught in 45 minutes.

“The Anchorage Fire Department recognizes that a person suffering a cardiac arrest event, has his or her best chance of survival if CPR is delivered right away after calling 911. People used to be afraid to do CPR because of the breathing component. The new CPR is hands only! Our vision is a city where everyone around you knows CPR and would be willing to provide it to you, if you suffered an event”, stated Michelle Weston, Deputy Fire Chief.

AFD and the Loren Marshall Foundation are available to come to community groups to provide CPR training. For more information contact the Anchorage Fire Department at 267-5091.

If you have the time to include a training like this in your next school or work or neighborhood event I’d highly recommend it.  Not only do you become more familiar with updated CPR methods, but a FIREMAN will come to give the training.  Need I say more?

Les will be out of town for two weeks but if you need anything please don’t hesitate to call Dave and me.  We hope you’re enjoying the summer as much as we are!
