Action Alert: Monday Is Your Chance to Stand Up to Ensure Alaska Gets Our Fair Share of Federal Stimulus Funding

The Senate Finance Committee is considering SB 161, which would appropriate federal stimulus money. Currently this bill does not include the money that Governor Palin originally said she would reject. It is critical that the state accept this funding if it is to ride out the lean economic times and deliver valuable and needed services to our citizens.

Stimulus Funding Not Yet Included in SB 161:

  • $113.7 million in state fiscal stabilization funds that would go directly to public schools, early childhood education programs, and the University of Alaska.
  • $56.6 million for energy efficiency and weatherization programs around the state.
  • $33 million in funding for special education, including programs for children with special needs.
  • $29.5 million for Title I grants to schools serving low-income neighborhoods.
  • $33 million for workforce training and development.
  • $7.2 million for public safety programs around the state.
  • $300,000 for the Alaska State Council on the Arts to support Alaskan artists.

Make Your Voice Heard

Make Your Voice Heard       Monday, April 6 at 9am the Senate Finance Committee will take public testimony on SB 161. It is critical that Alaskans make their voices heard so legislators and the Governor are aware of the public support for adding this funding to SB 161. If legislators do not hear from their constituents they will be less inclined to maximize the return of our federal tax dollars to our state.

Click here to find your local Legislative Information Office to testify in support of this funding. Additionally, you can write a letter to the editor to your local newspaper, email your legislator, and get your friends to do the same.

It is imperative that the Governor and legislators hear from the public. Click here to submit a letter to the editor to your local paper, here to find your legislator, and here to contact Governor Palin.

P.S.- Thank you for taking action ASAP.
